Habits of Jesus: From Crowds to Community
The tension we face today is not a lack of belief, but a reluctance toward vulnerability
Jesus didn’t call disciples simply to hear Him—He called them to be with Him.
Community is not an add-on to spirituality—it reflects the nature of God.
Genesis 1:26 | John 17:21
Jesus forms community through proximity before productivity
Mark 3:13–15 (ESV)
“And he went up on the mountain and called to him those whom he desired, and they came to him. And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach and have authority to cast out demons.”
The early church was ignited in crowds, but formed in homes
Acts 2:42–47 (ESV)
“And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”
Spiritual formation requires life-on-life discipleship
Hebrews 3:12–13 (ESV)
Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
Ephesians 6:16 (ESV)
In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one

CAUTION: It’s possible to attend church without being formed by Christ.
Vulnerability is the cost of genuine community.
Galatians 6:1–3 (ESV)
Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.
